10 Life Lessons that Sports teaches you

22770540_1125404727601578_2269922025478430819_oLove indulging yourself in sports like football, cricket or basketball? Sports play an irreplaceable role in our lives. The Indian spirit comes to full circle with the very utterance of cricket or hockey and in recent times, the evolution of sports like football, basketball, kabaddi and a number of indoor sports can be noticeable. Most universities, colleges, and schools in India encourage their students to take part in tournaments that would help in enriching the liking for the sport, as well as enhance the skills of the students to make them perform better, and learn and grow from their experiences. Students interested in sports are encouraged to take part in state level and even national and international level competitions in order to gain the exposure they deserve. Many institutes across India also provide a sports quota to certain students, to push them into pursuing what they love and make a career out of that sport, be it as a manager or player or coordinator. In a world where digitization has taken over the working of individuals as a whole, it is wonderful to observe certain other individuals still having their focus on activities that do not concern technology alone. Sports and its foundation has had a long history in India, and would probably continue to maintain its streak as we witness fine players, marking their name in history as the year’s progress.
In a recent interview with Ms. Abhilasha Shukla, an assistant professor from Techno Institute of Management Sciences (TIMS), Lucknow, she had stated some interesting details about the Sports Week in her institution, called ‘Antarag’. The sports events were conducted between 23rd October to 28th October. Several students took part in the various events which included badminton, cricket, volleyball, darts, carroms, chess and even arm wrestling. It was a very exciting and challenging week for the students as they competed to showcase their skills and ultimately gain a position that would lead them further into the competition. The students taking part including those from B.Ed, B.Com, BBA, BFA, B.Sc, as well as M.Com, MJMC and PGDM. The results have not been declared yet as these batches compete throughout the academic year and await their Batch of The Year Trophy during February when the Cultural Night takes place. It is accompanied by other cultural, academic and off-stage events that add to the excitement of this entire competition and act as an impetus for the students to try harder and excel in their respective fields. Like TIMS in Lucknow, institutes across India are currently having their Sports Day or Week and the hard work and dedication displayed by the students is immense. Sports provide many positive opportunities to students as well as create a sense of companionship and trust among them to strive for better things. More than winning and losing, the role of sports is to build better players put of individuals and help them keep their head in the game for a challenging match, even if they lose. Good athletes know the worth of sports and discipline themselves accordingly. Living in a competitive society, an individual is required to learn to become a proper team player rather than a leader to follow cohesiveness and not interpret losing as a major worry, but as a part and parcel of every game. It is very important to imbibe the significance of sports in people’s lives to make them aware of what it actually is to play a sport and how one can benefit from the same. The following list displays some of the life lessons that sports can teach you, in your life,

1. Hard work will not always get you where you want to be. Sometimes, results would not be shown as quick as you would like them to be. But that is the beauty of any sport, and your efforts would surely get you where you want to be, in time. Hard work definitely pays off. It took years of dedication for Christiano Ronaldo to transform his body from skinny to toned. It is vital for you to push yourself beyond limits to expect nothing, but the best.2. Learn to become a leader, but also a follower. An entire season of sports would definitely give you the chance to lead your team which would include you training your team, giving them inspiration when they are down and working together as a team to have a good match. What comes with giving praises and criticisms is following it, and a good player or follower knows how to take what he or she gets and make the most of it become better at his or her game.

3. Build the trust needed to play a good sport. A good game would be nothing without trust and companionship with your fellow mates, hence, working towards building strong friendships with your fellow players is necessary to keep your focus on the game, and help and gain help from them in order to achieve victory.

4. Learn to maintain your cool even if you do not quite make it. Not every day is a good one, with hardships and challenges always on the run. Sometimes you might not be able to make that basket or get that ball in the goal. Your coach’s harsh words would be all you hear the entire day but that should not become the reason to let you down. Learn from your mistakes and make use of them to develop and become a better sportsman, than you were a while back.

5. Sports let you better the skill you are already good at by providing you with obstacles and further challenges. Every game is a test of your skills and it is up to you to help yourself become better at the game you love, or not.

6. Sports would require you to push your body beyond its limits. This does not mean you would have to adopt an entirely new lifestyle. Taking care of your body by eating healthy or gaining some pounds would definitely let you excel at your sport. There might be times when you would have to strain relentlessly, and it might take a toll on your body. However, this is not the end and life has more in store for you. Building your body and training to play better at your game can be tiring, but at the end of the day, it is definitely worth it.

7. The need to self-reflect goes hand-in-hand. Strictly following any sport might make room for some self-reflection from time to time to observe where you are lacking or over-doing it. Whether it be regarding your body or the game, self-reflection helps you strive and become better by allowing you the room to improve.

8. Sports enable an individual to reach goals. The constant urge to become better and set up new goals and meet them is the right way for any athlete to learn from his or her game.

9. Having the support of your friends and family is a good way to encourage yourself from time to time. Having people who would cheer for you and your sport, no matter what, help you keep your head in the game and also help regain the motivation you need to play your game.

10. Life is more than just a game. The truest lesson that sports can teach you is that a game is just a game and it is best to be played in the same manner as well. The experiences you gain and the people you surround yourself with making a better statement for your life than any game defining you and your life.

PGDM vs MBA – Which would make a better choice for your career?

Do you hold a degree in business or wish to change career paths? Are you a recent graduate confused about what to take up for your further studies? If you are an MBA aspirant, you would have definitely considered the best colleges in the market. Having said that, you must also have started studying and researching your subject in order to make the cut. If you think getting an MBA or Master’s of Business Administration is all you need to set your career straight, the world of education welcomes you its other alternative known as a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management. PGDM or Post-Graduate Diploma in Management is a diploma course offered by the institutes that are recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and which are autonomous and not affiliated with any university. It is a 2-year course which will train candidates into bright business professionals. They are trained in business economics, market structure, investment, retailing, entrepreneurship etc. A lot of people gaining one or two years of experience in management studies further wish to pursue an MBA or a PGDM to enhance their skill set. While many think MBA holds a greater importance than a PGDM, some even hold the belief that both the courses are equivalent to one another. They are, in fact, very different from each other in terms of course content, value, fees and placement structure. However, accreditation by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) makes a university/college’s PGDM course equivalent to an MBA.Nikhilesh Mathur, an expert from says, “MBA and PGDM are both business orientated courses. The main aim of the courses is to equip a person who wants to move up in the hierarchy and enter into the management field.” While MBA is a degree course, a PGDM is a diploma course. Many students tend to believe that a diploma course holds lesser value than a degree course, but that is not the case. Top business universities like the IIMs and XLRI Jamshedpur offer PGP or PGDM courses which hold a great importance in the market, upon completion of the course. These institutes, being autonomous bodies have their own rules and management and thus offer what they feel would be best for their students. While most would like to go the old-school way, there are many who wish to take up a PGDM course. As marketing management is becoming a diverse subject, as the years progress, a PGDM course would be a viable option for students who wish to go further down this line. The course offers immense flexibility to students in terms of content delivery methods, hands-on project work, and career opportunities.
